The art of digital recording, mixing, and engineering is widely misunderstood by musicians. Many of my fellow players, and songwriters have this mistaken idea that their understanding of music qualifies them to make their own records, and they are often disappointed in the results.
A good producer/engineer knows a little about music, a lot about software, and a ton about sound reinforcement; but what makes a great engineer is an understanding of an artist's mindset that allows him or her to bring to life that artist's vision to its fullest potential.
Whether it's the willingness to tell an artist hard truths, or the focus to sit at a console for hours on end to polish a few seconds of audio, Mr. Lance has demonstrated to me the drive and professionalism necessary to achieve greatness in his field.
My working relationship with Mr. Lance has hopefully only just begun. There are few people that I've come across in a studio setting that can approach his level of dedication to making sure every record he produces is of impeccable quality.
